Oaxaca, Mexico is among the poorest regions in Latin America. Three out of four people lack access to basic necessities like food, water, education and health care. Due to its diverse people groups, many adults speak tribal languages as their first language and Spanish as their second. Most have nothing more than a third or fourth grade education, making already scarce jobs even harder to find.
Many families are forced to live in one-room shacks made of scraps of wood and tin. They lack running water, electricity and a sewer system. Dirt floors are common and often lead to disease and infection. Meals are rare and usually cooked over an open fire.
Children are starved for food and affection; too well acquainted with malnutrition, neglect and abandonment. Childhood is often cut short as children are forced to drop out of school to get a job, continuing the cycle of poverty. Desperate girls hope pregnancy will bring a husband. Boys search for escape through violence and drugs.
“But Jesus called the children to him and said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.’” —Luke 18:16
