Mitkel lives with his mother, stepfather and two sisters in a two-bedroom brick house with a corrugated sheet metal roof and a polished cement floor. He and his sisters share a bedroom. They cook with propane and electricity, and have running water every two days from the town water line which they boil to drink. They do not have a refrigerator nor a TV set. They use an outdoor latrine. There is a black water ditch located near the home.
Mitkel parents are divorced, his father does not provide financially for his children. His mother is remarried and stays at home to care for the family. Mitkel’s stepfather works as a carpenter. The family has two meals a day until mid-month, then they have one and a sandwich as the other meal. Mitkel does not have breakfast before going to school.
