Yailen, who goes by her middle name, Amisadai, lives with her parents and two sisters in a two-bedroom apartment with a kitchen and bathroom, that is owned by her grandfather. The home has untreated running water and electricity. They cook with propane and charcoal. Amisadai’s grandfather has one bedroom, and she, her two sisters, and her parents share the other one.
Both of Amisadai's parents are employed but there is alcoholism in the family which causes problems at home financially and emotionally.
