Yiné lives with her mother and her little brother in a one-bedroom wood house with sheet metal roof and a dirt floor. They have an outdoor latrine. Yiné shares a bed with her brother and doesn’t sleep well at night. The family uses electricity and wood to cook and have running water every two days from the town water line which they boil to drink. They do not have a TV set nor a refrigerator and lack containers to save sufficient water on the days they have none. The lighting in the house is dim and difficult for studying and homework.
Yiné’s parents are divorced. Her father lives in Havana and neither supports her nor stays in contact. Her mother has a boyfriend and sometimes they all go out together. The family usually has two meals a day but she sees that her mother often will have only one so that there is enough food for her children toward the end of the month.
