Grechel lives with her mother, stepfather, and an older brother. They have a two-bedroom brick house with a corrugated asbestos cement roof that is still under construction. They cook with propane and have running water every two days from the town water line which they boil for drinking. They use an outdoor latrine. The lighting of the house is dim, hindering Grechel from studying at night. There are black water ditches very close to the house.
Grechel’s mother is a farmer and her stepfather is the administrator of a coffee mill in the mountains nearby. They have two meals a day for the most of the month, but at the end of the month, they have only one and a piece of bread with cooking oil and a soft drink as a snack.
