Melany lives with her mother, grandmother, oldest sister, and her uncle on the 5th floor of an apartment building. The home has two bedrooms, electricity and indoor plumbing. They boil water to drink and cook with propane, charcoal and electricity. All of the women in the household share a bedroom and Melany’s uncle has his own.
Melany is the daughter of her mother’s second marriage. Her parents divorced when she was little, and her mother moved them into the home of their uncle and grandmother. Melany suffers from gastritis, ulcerative colitis and other health conditions related parasitic and/or bacterial infection. She must take daily medication and adhere to a strict diet.
