The Mission of Forward Edge:

As Forward Edge begins its 34th year of ministry, it seems appropriate to highlight the “why” behind who we are and what we do.

When Forward Edge began in 1983, our primary mission was to provide opportunities for “ordinary Christ followers” to hear and respond to God’s call on their lives. To illustrate this mission, I have often told the following story.

A man with a bucket of water comes suddenly on a building engulfed in flames. Next to the building is a row of sleeping firemen. The man must make a choice. Does he throw his bucket on the building or on the row of sleeping firemen?

From the beginning, waking up the sleeping firemen—i.e. turning rank-and-file believers from spectators into participants—has been our highest priority. It’s a priority based on the teaching of scripture:

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared in advance for us to do,” Eph. 2:10.

In 2005, when Forward Edge transitioned from a short-term missions agency into a full-fledged, relief and development organization, the scope of that priority dramatically broadened. Today, our mission of helping people discover and pursue God’s plan for them not only applies to volunteers on our mission teams, but those they go to serve…the hundreds of vulnerable children and families impacted by our child-focused, community development programs.

As we begin a new year of ministry, I want to thank you for being a vital part of this kingdom-advancing mission. May God use us in 2017 to awaken an ever-growing number of sleeping firemen!
